Setting up for the Sanborn Star Party

(setup)

After multiple cancellations in the fall and again earlier in the week, Sanborn Elementary (Andover) had a star party on Thursday (28-may-15) night.  Earlier thunderstorms and the later start (due to darkness not coming until 9) may have combined to reduce the crowd from prior years to about 80 students and parents.

The evening started at 8:30 with a presentation by Brewster LaMacchia on Venus, the moon, Jupiter, and Saturn, which were all visible for the event.

Outside John Hobbs, Michael Deneen, Dave Aucoin, John Gall, Bryan Stone, Marc Tardiff (who gets bonus points for doing the event with his arm in a sling), Alex Newhouse, and Tom Vozzella set up scopes for the very enthusiastic crowd. Unfortunately some lingering clouds to the east and the tree line kept Saturn out of site until the end of the event. But plenty of other targets were visible.  The school PTA made a generous donation to the club.
