Minutes of the NSAAC Business Meeting May 2, 2014

President Hocker called the May Business Meeting of the NSAAC to order at 8:15 PM.  There were four members present plus five Board members.   There was a not a quorum.  Meeting was information only.


No report.


Kevin Ackert will give the board a final close of the books by the May Board meeting.


There was a new member Vladislav.Mlch. There are 73 members in good standing.  Richard Leucke will send out a reminder letter to those old members who have not renewed.

Committee Reports:

Merrimack College:

No report.  

Salem University:

On Monday April 7th there were be 19 pre-schoolers and parents at the observatory.  Dennis was washed out the rest of April due to weather. 

News, Correspondence, and Upcoming Activities:

American Astronomical Meeting is in Boston June 3 and they are asking if anyone from the club interested.  No one expressed interest.

Star Party Committee:

Ryan school in Tewksbury clouded out this week.

Here’s what is planned for the rest of the Spring, details will be sent closer to the event dates (most dates Tues with Thurs cloud date):

May 6/8: Danvers Holton Richmond Middle (Tentative, this is a last minute request but it’s a school we normally do). Typically there will be100 6th graders & parents. May 15th: Tentative date for makeup

May 20/22nd: AB Bruce Middle Lawrence. About 60 6th graders & parents expected

June 3/5th: Camp Kent Amesbury. (this event is combined with the Battis Farm one that was clouded out). Approx 50 people expected.

So far for the summer we have a request from Danvers Library to hold an event at Endicott Park in August. Dates are still TBD.

Brewster will send out another communication to the club requesting participation.

Telescope Clinic:

Bryan Stone assisted Richard Leucke in collimation of his 10 inch DOB.  The other requestor for the clinic did not show up.

YAP Program:

The two submissions for the YAP program were the only ones.  The board decided who should get the first and second prizes.  The second prize winner was to Alisha Smith and she was given here binoculars and books at the Scope Clinic prior to tonight’s business meeting.  The first place winner was Grace Adam and her telescope will be presented to her May 17th at Veasey Park.

Old Business:

The club still would like to find other volunteers to do star party presentations.  If anyone is interested please contact Brewster LaMacchia.

Ed Burke has sent Ron Sampson the files with the banner and logo and Ron has been in contact with the school that is going to produce the banner.

The club presented outgoing president Bryan Stone with a sweatshirt with the new club logo.

New Business:

The club needs to contact John Tulick of the Mass DCR to update the permit for Dark Park.

The May Board meeting date will be Monday May 12th at 7:30 PM at Veasey.

Meeting adjourned 8:40 PM.
